Sunrise at Trona

Even though we had a gorgeous moonlit night, the sunrise and sunset were a bit boring with no clouds in the sky. The shadows cast by the pinnacles made for a great photo though

Stars and Pinnacles

It is definitely possible to get star trails on a full moon night. I started off with a clear blue sky, but within half hour there were clouds streaking across the sky.

A Trona Moonrise

There was really no clouds in the sky. So I was really surprised to get this much color in the sky. And yes the light is completely from the full moon rising.

Camping at Trona

Camping out in the middle of nowhere with no campsite or facilities is totally liberating. My buddy Evan had this cool camper while I huddled in my tent under the stars

Great Wide Open

Literally in the middle of nowhere. Driving to Trona Pinnacles requires some serious offroading with just the wide open desert all around!

Fire on the Horizon

The last vestiges of the sunset burn out in a brilliant display of deep red.

The show is almost over. The sun has long disappeared over the horizon leaving deep red clouds.

Lake of Fire

I still keep coming back to this incredible sunset from the shores of Salton Sea. The world seemed to be enveloped in Orange.

Reflected Dreams

Salton Sea is by far the most surreal place I have been to. This incredible sunset seemed to be nature's Rorschach test.

Flotsam at the Edge of the World

The totally surreal landscape of the soon to be Dead Sea of the West - Salton Sea. This man-made lake is rapidly gaining salinity from the agricultural runoff, leaving the shores covered with dead fish. However an incredible place to take photos.

Joyride

Now that's a fully loaded vehicle. Just need to find an inch of space to put on a "You are beautiful" sticker.

Salvation Mountain

This work of art was built by local artist Leonard Knight from adobe, straw and tons of colorful paint.

Magic Bus

I'm usually not a fan of selective coloring, but I just could not resist the stark contrast between the arid desert landscape and the colorful bus.

Light Flow

The harsh midday sun can work well in a canyon highlighting the sculpted rock with its twists and turns.

Ocotillo Blooms

The thorny tendrils dance and reach for the skies offering red blooms to the rising sun.

Grand Finale at Font's Point

The last rays of the sun really painted a glorious watercolor across the sky and covered the mountains and desert below with a shroud of purple hues. Font's Point is the best overlook at the vast Anza-Borrego State Park. Getting there requires a 4-wheel drive and driving the last few miles through rock and sand.

Font's Point is the best overlook at the vast Anza-Borrego State Park. There were a lot of people out there given how remote the place is. You have to drive through a sandy creek bed to get there.

Through the Arch

It's amazing how erosion shapes the rocks over the years. This archway was the entrance of the Palm Wash Slot Canyon in Anza-Borrego.

Thorny Tendrils

I was playing around with this image and I really wanted bring out the starkness of the desert. The infrared filter in Nik Color Efex did the trick.

Anza Borrego Sunset

As the sun went down, the wispy clouds started changing colors. It was just the beginning of the fantastic display.

Canyons of Anza Borrego

Fonts Point is a great lookout point to check out the sunset over the canyons in Anza Borrego State Park. It's a bit difficult to get to, but totally worth the view.

Sunlit Ridges

The landscape of Anza Borrego is gorgeous with the canyons stretching out into the horizon. The evening sun lights it up perfectly changing colors as the sun goes down.
